The Carleton University Debating Society (CUDS) is a non-profit, student-run organization at Carleton University, dedicated to encouraging participation in debate, public speaking and analysis of issues in today’s society.
CUDS is a member of the Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate (CUSID) Central region, and is an officially sanctioned club under the Carleton University Students Association (CUSA).
CUDS is open to anyone! That’s right, whether you’re in Public Affairs, English, or even if you’re a Math major or an Engineer, CUDS welcomes you. All registered Carleton University students are eligible for membership – all you have to do is show up at the meetings!
Come out to one of our meetings and try your hand in public speaking, or debate! CUDS holds informal mock debates amongst ourselves, so if you’ve never debated before, or want to try debate in an informal atmosphere, our meetings are great for you.
CUDS members also attend various intercollegiate debate tournaments at the university level in a variety of formats. While predominantly, debates are held in the Canadian Parliamentary style of debate, CUDS debaters also debate in British Parliamentary style. These tournaments culminate in the National Championships, held around March each year. Each university in Canada can send teams, which CUDS does every year.
In addition to attending debate tournaments, CUDS is also involved in moderating public debates, holding debate tournaments, and other debate related activities. Look, in the future, for events that CUDS is involved in at Carleton.
Debate-a-thon for Tsunami Victims
the Carleton University Debating Society, along with the University of Ottawa English Debating Society (EDS), and other CUSID members from across the country will be holding a 24-hour long debating marathon to raise money for tsunami relief efforts. Inspired by the efforts of EDS debater Jamie Furniss, who after winning the World Championships dropped everything to help relief efforts in Indonesia, we hope to do our part in helping to relieve the suffering occurring in southeast Asia. You can read some powerful accounts of Jamie’s experiences
We will be starting at 9am on Monday at the University of Ottawa’s University Centre and ending at 9am the following Tuesday. If you would like to help out and take part by taking a shift, or if you would like to make a contribution
Updated: The Panda Debate has been postponed. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Every year, the CUDS and the University of Ottawa English Debating Society hold the Panda Debate – in the tradition of past Carleton/Ottawa U showdowns, the Panda Debate is an informal tournament where novice or inexperienced debaters will pair up with an experienced debater and face off against teams from the EDS. In last year’s Panda Debate, EDS won, taking home the coveted stuffed Panda. Let’s win it back this year!

Umbria: a region to be discovered
The holidays are approaching and here is the usual dilemma: are you planning to take a nice trip in the company of one of your beautiful escorts from Escort Directory, and you have not yet decided where to go? To vary from the classic destinations such as Tuscany or Venice, which have now stewed, choose something unusual, but that will still amaze you: it is Umbria, a region too often forgotten, but which contains jewels of history, art and nature, in the heart of Italy.
Meeting point of the ancient and modern, your next trip to Umbria will amaze you
The region offers so many different points of attraction that it is difficult to make a choice on what to see: a week may not be enough to discover all the Umbrian treasures. Therefore, based on your tastes and those of your Rome escort: if you love both art and spirituality, Assisi and Perugia could be great options; if you prefer something more naturalistic, a weekend on Lake Trasimeno could be for you.
Let’s start from the big cities: Perugia, first of all. City founded by the Etruscans, which has seen the succession of Romans and Byzantines, is a place where you can breathe air of other times, discovering the traces that the past has left to the city. Numerous churches, museums and places of interest all to discover together with your escort, in one of the largest centers of Umbria that will make you fall in love.
As the spiritual capital of the region, we find Assisi, the birthplace of St. Francis. In every medieval alley you can breathe an air of peace, culminating the visit with the Basilica of Assisi, with its famous frescoes restored inside. Right next to the church, remember to bring your Rome escort from to visit the Garden of San Francesco, where both religious and lay people can enjoy a walk immersed in the peace of nature of the botanical garden and find a bit of serenity.
Capital instead of Umbrian culture is Spoleto, a center of art and culture, where you can walk admiring the churches and the medieval center on a human scale, and enjoy excellent specialties of local cuisine. You could choose to bring one of your most elegant escorts to the city during the renowned Festival of Two Worlds, an international event of art, music and culture not to be missed, which will only impress.
Umbria, a perfect destination between nature, art and history
If you want to bet on some spectacle of nature, do not miss the fossil forest of Dunarobba. This forest, which came to light in the seventies under a clay quarry, is composed of trees dating back to about 2 million years ago, which, being buried, have retained their characteristics: an impressive historical legacy. The panorama that can be admired here is certainly unique and will leave your Rome escorts speechless.
Too often and wrongly forgotten, Umbria contains many other jewels and treasures, a region made up of small towns to be discovered and unique and amazing natural landscapes. It will be the perfect place to discover in the company of one of your beautiful escorts and, after the first time, you can not miss getting back together!
